One of our tasks was to visit the residents in Western Belize. While our purpose was to conduct epidemiologic study and to raise disease awareness, it was just a pleasure getting to know the community.
Also, we made sure to always take time to admire the pet turkeys.

Do you go through a certain organization/company to go on these international medical trips?
Hello. 🙂 I sometimes go with NGO’s, but more frequently I work independently, especially if I plan to stay for several months.
I’d be interested in finding out how you set up your independent trips. This is amazing.
It’s different depending on the situation and trip length (my trips have been anywhere from 3 weeks to 2 years), but usually I research specific hospitals in whatever country I’m going to and contact them directly to coordinate all the details.
I see you are applying to medical school? I think that’s wonderful. 🙂 Personally, every experience I have had abroad has changed my life and has shaped me into the kind of caregiver I am today. It wasn’t always easy (especially during longer trips), but I never regretted a single day.
Best of luck to you in your endeavors! Don’t hesitate to keep in touch if you want to know anything. 🙂
