Still Dreaming [a poem]

By Brittny Lee | Featured Contributor

Trees still grow
Flaming crimsons and candy apple greens

On a street where she loved
and lived and sang with the stars

Her dream consumed her
A temptress all in white

Blush red among alabaster cheeks
becoming love tumbling down hills with her dream
Heart beating vital blood
Tendons stretching and breaths coming out in rasps
She reached her goal

Taut muscles balled as she massaged the cream into her skin
Torrents of pain shot her down
Her neck, her knees, her thighs, her back
She choked back a sob
when the doctors told her why.

Her smile only so deep
She fancied dancing with sycamore trees
Climbing the great pines
and looking out into the valleys

As her pain waxed,
She was found weeping with the willows

The day her dream departed.
A smile, the blush betraying her frail features

Her love, her passion, it was deep enough to bring her dream back.

Author’s Note:

I was diagnosed a few years ago with fibromyalgia. This poem is about my experience with getting diagnosed. I always knew something was different about me. I have always had a lot of mental energy and stamina . I was diagnosed with ADHD before kindergarten and stopped napping at 1 year old. So when in my twenties my body began demanding more rest, I couldn’t understand it. I would push myself and push myself and get sick very often . I was tested for cancer and many other things. I was sent to a rheumatologist and was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I am on medicine that does take the edge off but the body fatigue and mental fog still are a battle. I don’t post too much on my blog site about fibromyalgia. I mostly post poetry that I write paired with a photo I took . I am in love with photography as is my fiancé, Matt. I started my blog years before I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia among a few things. Blogging really helped me to open up and get to know a lot of people who cherished poetry and photography as much as I do. It also helped me with my physical and mental health having this community to talk with. Today, I post my poetry in the hope of helping others who may be experiencing the same thing.
