Prayer to the Elements [a poem]

Protect the soils:
soils from which
new life grows
life to sustain us
with its nourishing blooms
till we return to the earth
to begin
another cycle

Nothing that I have
feels like it is mine
anymore
because we have
transcended the
time, of material
wealth;
attachment to
possessions, and
physical
temporary
things –

The spiritual quest to explore,
the theory of mind and its score.
Parallels of circumstance,
testing the intellect to advance.
Narratives on individual psychology,
complexity of thought throughout history.
Considerations beyond the bound of tale,
the struggle to survive as soul cannot fail.
Emotional depth of sea that inspire,
trusting matters of the experiences dire.
Epic psychology and its dilemma,
Cyclopes and Hydras forever.
The story of love that waits,
mutual recognition and opening,
the golden gates.

Lying in my upstairs bedroom at home in San Antonio, Texas back in 1999, I was frightfully sick with a terrible flu-related virus. I felt as if I were dying. I laid half asleep and half out of sleep. At this depth of illness, I cared not whether I lived or died. So I simply fell asleep thinking this was it for me. I was forty-five at the time. Life had proved cruel, and all so often we need some type of boost to get us back on track. I felt I was at the end of my rope, both emotionally and mentally, but my writing career was just beginning. Spiritually, I was alive and well, but my body had suffered greatly over the years. I was in very bad shape.

Everyday, a wilderness
a challenge,
a pain…
Our hearts and souls
are hard at work.
The world is in turmoil
and cannot be ignored.
We struggle together.
I pray for all of us…

I was enjoying life
with a secure future,
when suddenly
a dense darkness
came from nowhere,
turned everything
upside down,
and left me
with a lifeless life,
a future with a question mark.
Forced me to write a letter
to the creator of all
with an obvious shame-
where was this thought
when I had it all?
A very long letter
with countless words,
limitless questions,
an exaggeration of misery
was posted to heaven,
expecting a reply
with patience and surprise.
I received a reply.
A note from God
with only two magical words.
Trust Me.
And I looked up at the sky
and held my head high.

“Waking up this morning,
I smile.
Twenty-four brand new hours are before me.
I vow
to live fully
in each moment
and to look at all beings
with eyes of compassion.”
-Thich Nhat Hanh
